How it works

The game puts the player’s already-earned value at risk — assets that decay, get raided while offline, or are granted only temporarily — and sells protection or permanence. Payment buys not an advance but the avoidance of a loss the design itself threatens.

Why it can be harmful

Loss aversion makes the threat of losing something owned far more motivating than an equivalent gain, so the mechanic exerts outsized pressure to spend or to keep playing on the game’s schedule. It turns the player’s own investment into leverage against them, with no genuine way to opt out short of paying.
